What the skill was

One skill I recently taught someone was how to use Microsoft Excel for basic data analysis. It might sound simple, but for someone with little to no experience in spreadsheets, it can be quite overwhelming at first.

Who you taught it to

I taught this skill to one of my colleagues at work. She had just joined our team and was struggling to organize and interpret data for weekly reports. Since I use Excel daily and have a strong grasp of its functions, I offered to help her out.

How you taught it

I began by introducing her to the basics—how to enter and format data, use simple formulas like SUM and AVERAGE, and create tables. Gradually, we moved on to slightly more advanced functions such as filters, conditional formatting, and basic charts.

I made sure to break everything down into manageable steps and encouraged her to practice each new function right after I demonstrated it. We had short sessions every day for a week, and I also gave her small tasks to complete on her own so she could apply what she’d learned.

Explain how you felt about teaching this skill

Teaching this skill was incredibly rewarding for me. It reminded me that even something I take for granted can be very valuable to someone else. It also helped strengthen our working relationship. Seeing her grow more confident and efficient with her work was a great feeling, and it made me appreciate the importance of sharing knowledge. Overall, it was a very fulfilling experience that highlighted the impact of patient, hands-on teaching.
