Natural Disasters

I’m going to talk about natural disasters this is an interesting topic because depending on where you live you might have to deal with natural disasters on a regular basis. let’s go through some of the most notable disasters that occur throughout the world.

First let’s talk about earthquakes for a lot of people this might just be the scariest disaster because it can strike at any moment without any notice that being said, the vast majority of earthquakes are minor and cause little to no damage.

As a California native I’ve obviously witnessed my share of earthquakes but I’ve only ever really experienced one major earthquake.

It just so happens that I was at the gym, and when the earthquake started all the weights and machines started shaking. I was definitely a little freaked out but that’s really the only time I ‘ve been in a big earthquake.

If you live in certain parts of the world, you might never have experienced an earthquake in your whole life for example my Brazilian students, usually tell me that they’ve never been in an earthquake before but on the other hand my students from Chile and Japan, tell me that they feel an earthquake almost every week.

For most of us that seems insane, and what about you? have you ever been in an earthquake before?

Okay so now let’s talk about hurricanes. Hurricanes can be some of the most destructive events imaginable take hurricane Katrina. for instance, this category 5 hurricane absolutely devastated the city of New Orleans, and caused almost 2,000 deaths and over 125 billion dollars in damage, of course not all hurricanes are this catastrophic but all hurricanes cause some damage when they hit land.

Thankfully I’ ve never been affected by a hurricane before since I’m from the west coast of the US which is never affected by hurricanes, but for people living on the south and east coasts these storms pose a constant threat.

I can’t imagine what it would feel like to know that there’s a hurricane headed straight in my direction I hope I never find out all right another natural disaster that can cause all kinds of damage is a tornado. tornadoes are a phenomenon that happen in the middle of the US.

In states like Oklahoma, Kansas and, Nebraska where the landscape is really flat, you might have seen tornadoes featured in American movies before, where the people have to take shelter underground and wait for the tornado to pass by their town. I’m glad that I’ve never gotten caught in the path of a tornado before.

Alright one more natural disaster that affects people all over the world is floods.

Floods can happen in all kinds of different places if you live in a city that doesn’t have a high level of infrastructure it’s likely that you’ve seen some flooding before. in Mexico for example many parts of the big cities flood every time there’s heavy rain, the parts of the city that are at a lower altitude become like lakes and rivers and drivers have a hard time navigating.

بلایای طبیعی

می‌خواهم درباره بلایای طبیعی صحبت کنم، چون این موضوع جالب است و بسته به جایی که زندگی می‌کنید ممکن است با بلایای طبیعی به طور مداوم روبه‌رو شوید. بیایید نگاهی به برخی از مهم‌ترین بلایای طبیعی که در سراسر جهان رخ می‌دهند بیندازیم.

اول از همه، بیایید درباره زلزله‌ها صحبت کنیم. برای خیلی از مردم، زلزله ترسناک‌ترین بلای طبیعی است چون ممکن است بدون هیچ هشدار قبلی در هر لحظه رخ دهد. البته بیشتر زلزله‌ها کوچک هستند و آسیب زیادی وارد نمی‌کنند.

من که اهل کالیفرنیا هستم، به طور طبیعی زلزله‌های زیادی را تجربه کرده‌ام، ولی تنها یک زلزله بزرگ را حس کرده‌ام. خوشبختانه آن موقع در باشگاه بودم و وقتی زلزله شروع شد، همه وزنه‌ها و دستگاه‌ها شروع به لرزیدن کردند. کمی ترسیدم، اما این تنها باری بود که در زلزله‌ای شدید بودم. ممکن است اگر در جایی دیگر زندگی کنید، هیچ‌وقت زلزله‌ای را تجربه نکرده باشید.

مثلاً دانش‌آموزان برزیلی من همیشه می‌گویند که هیچ‌وقت زلزله نداشته‌اند، اما از طرف دیگر، دانش‌آموزان من از شیلی و ژاپن می‌گویند که تقریباً هر هفته زلزله‌ای را احساس می‌کنند. برای بیشتر ما این خیلی عجیب است. شما چطور؟ تا به حال زلزله‌ای را تجربه کرده‌اید؟

حالا بیایید درباره طوفان‌های “هاریکان” صحبت کنیم. هاریکان‌ها می‌توانند خیلی ویرانگر باشند. مثلاً طوفان کاترینا که یک طوفان دسته پنج بود و شهر نیو اورلان را کاملاً ویران کرد. این طوفان تقریباً ۲ هزار نفر کشته و بیش از ۱۲۵ میلیارد دلار خسارت به جا گذاشت. البته همه طوفان‌ها به این شدت نیستند، اما هر طوفانی که به خشکی می‌رسد، خسارتی وارد می‌کند.

خوشبختانه من هیچ‌وقت طوفان هاریکانی را تجربه نکرده‌ام چون اهل ساحل غربی ایالات متحده هستم و اینجا طوفان‌های هاریکان معمولاً نمی‌آید. اما کسانی که در سواحل جنوبی و شرقی زندگی می‌کنند، هر روز با این تهدیدها روبه‌رو هستند. نمی‌توانم تصور کنم چه حسی دارد که بدانم یک طوفان هاریکان دقیقاً به سمت من می‌آید. امیدوارم هیچ‌وقت مجبور به تجربه‌اش نشوم.

یکی دیگر از بلایای طبیعی که در ایالات متحده رخ می‌دهد، گردبادها هستند. گردبادها معمولاً در ایالاتی مثل اوکلاهما، کانزاس و نبراسکا که زمین‌های صاف دارند، به وجود می‌آیند. احتمالاً در فیلم‌های آمریکایی دیده‌اید که مردم مجبورند به پناهگاه‌های زیرزمینی بروند تا از خطر گردباد در امان بمانند. خوشحالم که هیچ‌وقت در مسیر یک گردباد نبوده‌ام.

و در نهایت، سیل‌ها یکی دیگر از بلایای طبیعی هستند که در بسیاری از نقاط دنیا اتفاق می‌افتند. اگر در شهری با زیرساخت ضعیف زندگی می‌کنید، احتمالاً تا به حال سیل‌هایی را تجربه کرده‌اید. مثلاً در مکزیک، بیشتر مناطق شهرهای بزرگ بعد از باران‌های شدید دچار سیل می‌شوند.
