We could probably classify American restaurants into several different categories. There are fast-food restaurants like your typical burger joints, like McDonald’s, Burger King, jack-in-the-box etc. These would obviously be considered the lowest class restaurants.

Then there are normal average restaurants that are chains or franchise, these places usually have locations all over the country as well as multiple locations in the same city. Then you’ve got your normal average restaurants that are individually or family-owned in the US. We sometimes call family-owned businesses ma and pas’ businesses so some of the restaurants in this category could be called Ma and Pa restaurants.

Then you’ve got your high-end restaurants which would be considered fine dining, these can be really fancy and expensive and if they’re really highly acclaimed, they might even have a Michelin star too. needless to say, most people can’t afford to eat at these restaurants too often.

One of the types of restaurants that’s distinctly American, is called a diner. Diners are restaurants that sell typical American food like American breakfast food burgers sandwiches steak etc. A lot of diners sell breakfast all day so you can order eggs sausage and pancakes at 9:00 p.m. if you want, I’ve always loved diners because they have a really American feel to them.

whenever I go on a road trip, I always look forward to stopping in the middle of nowhere and one of these classic American diners. You can always find diners off the highway in the middle of nowhere. All right now let’s talk about tipping. In the US this is something that all foreigners need to know because it’s a custom that’s different in the US than it is in other countries.

When you eat it a sit-down restaurant in the US, you’re expected to give a tip for the service you receive. There are no exceptions here even though it’s not mandated by law it’s an unspoken rule that all Americans abide by, you have to tip your waiter whether you feel like it or not.

So now you might be wondering how you have to tip well until recently 15% has been the standard tip at most restaurants but in the last few years they’ve been trying to raise this. Nowadays many restaurants expect 18% or more which I think is ludicrous.

I always give 15% no matter what and this is still acceptable but there’s definitely a visible effort on the part of restaurants to raise this percentage. So be aware of this if you’re traveling to the US any time soon. Lastly let’s talk about the common expressions we use in the restaurant environment.

When you first enter the restaurant and talk to the host you normally say how many people there are in your party, so you can say: can we have a table for two please? and to order food you can say a few different things you could say: I’ll have the cheeseburger, I’ll take the cheeseburger, or can I have the cheeseburger? you can use any of these phrases and just substitute the word cheeseburger for whatever dish you’re ordering.

If you want to ask the waiter for something else after you’ve already ordered you can just use the phrase “could I have” so for example you could say “could I have another glass of water please?” and one more note in the US you don’t ask for the check when you’re done eating, the waiter brings it to you without you asking. I know this might seem weird but it’s the custom.

ما می‌توانیم رستوران‌های آمریکایی را به چند دسته مختلف تقسیم کنیم. دسته اول رستوران‌های فست‌فود هستند، مثل همبرگر فروشی‌های معمولی که شامل مک‌دونالد، برگر کینگ، و جک این د باکس می‌شوند. این رستوران‌ها معمولاً به‌عنوان پایین‌ترین سطح رستوران‌ها در نظر گرفته می‌شوند.

دسته دوم رستوران‌های عادی و متوسط هستند که به‌صورت زنجیره‌ای یا فرنچایز فعالیت می‌کنند. این نوع رستوران‌ها معمولاً در سراسر کشور و حتی در یک شهر چندین شعبه دارند.

دسته سوم رستوران‌های متوسطی هستند که به‌صورت فردی یا خانوادگی در آمریکا اداره می‌شوند. گاهی به کسب‌وکارهای خانوادگی در آمریکا مامان و بابا (Ma and Pa) گفته می‌شود، بنابراین بعضی از رستوران‌های این دسته را هم می‌توان رستوران‌های «مامان و بابا» نامید.

دسته بعدی رستوران‌های لوکس و سطح بالا هستند که به آن‌ها (Fine Dining) می‌گویند. این رستوران‌ها بسیار شیک و گران هستند و اگر خیلی مشهور باشند، حتی ممکن است ستاره میشلن هم داشته باشند. البته واضح است که بیشتر مردم نمی‌توانند اغلب به این رستوران‌ها بروند.

یکی از انواع رستوران‌هایی که به‌طور خاص آمریکایی است، (Diner) نام دارد. داینرها رستوران‌هایی هستند که غذاهای معمول آمریکایی مثل صبحانه آمریکایی، همبرگر، ساندویچ، استیک و غیره ارائه می‌دهند. بسیاری از داینرها تمام روز صبحانه سرو می‌کنند، بنابراین اگر بخواهید، می‌توانید ساعت ۹ شب تخم‌مرغ، سوسیس و پنکیک سفارش دهید.

من همیشه داینرها را دوست داشته‌ام چون حس و حال کاملاً آمریکایی دارند. وقتی به سفر جاده‌ای می‌روم، همیشه مشتاقم که وسط راه در یکی از این داینرهای کلاسیک آمریکایی توقف کنم. می‌توانید دینرها را معمولاً در حاشیه بزرگراه‌ها و در مناطق دورافتاده پیدا کنید.

حالا نوبت صحبت در مورد انعام هست. در آمریکا، این موضوعی است که همه خارجی‌ها باید بدانند، چون این رسم در آمریکا با کشورهای دیگر متفاوت است. وقتی در یک رستوران نشسته‌اید و غذا می‌خورید، انتظار می‌رود که برای خدماتی که دریافت کرده‌اید انعام بدهید. این یک قانون غیررسمی است که همه آمریکایی‌ها به آن پایبند هستند، حتی اگر قانونی نباشد. شما باید به پیشخدمت انعام بدهید، چه دلتان بخواهد چه نه.

حالا ممکن است بپرسید چقدر باید انعام بدهید؟ تا همین اواخر، ۱۵ درصد استاندارد انعام در بیشتر رستوران‌ها رایج بود، اما در چند سال اخیر تلاش کرده‌اند این میزان را افزایش دهند. امروزه بسیاری از رستوران‌ها انتظار دارند که ۱۸ درصد یا بیشتر انعام بدهید، که به نظر من خیلی زیاد است. من همیشه ۱۵ درصد می‌دهم و این همچنان قابل قبول است، اما به‌وضوح تلاش‌هایی از سوی رستوران‌ها وجود دارد که این درصد را بالا ببرند. بنابراین اگر قصد سفر به آمریکا را دارید، این موضوع را در نظر داشته باشید.

در نهایت، بیایید درباره اصطلاحات رایجی که در محیط رستوران استفاده می‌شود صحبت کنیم. وقتی وارد رستوران می‌شوید و با میزبان صحبت می‌کنید، معمولاً تعداد افراد را اعلام میکنید. مثلاً می‌توانید بگویید: «ممکنه یک میز برای دو نفر داشته باشیم؟»

اگر بعد از سفارش چیزی خواستید، می‌توانید از عبارت «میشه….؟» استفاده کنید. مثلاً می‌توانید بگویید: «میشه یک لیوان آب دیگر داشته باشم؟»

و یک نکته دیگر، در آمریکا شما زمانی که غذا خوردنتان تمام شد، برای صورت‌حساب درخواست نمی‌کنید. پیشخدمت خودش بدون اینکه شما بگویید، صورت‌حساب را برایتان می‌آورد. شاید این برای شما عجیب باشد، اما این رسم آمریکایی هاست.
